The Club Car Speed Switch Replacement from Buggies Unlimited is a great way to bring a vintage golf cart into a newer era. Everyone loves to talk about what you can't do to those resistor-powered caddies. You can't speed them up; no putting a lift kit under the suspension. You should refrain from any torque improvements. Oh, and you cannot increase the tire size. However, all of this leads back to the bank of coils. As a matter of fact, if you add any extra demand, that old boy will get red hot and melt everything around it. That does not make a relaxing afternoon.
All you need to do to understand why you want one of these is to have problems with what it replaces. The older style sensors that the golf cart speed switch replaces were all copper contacted. There was essentially a fiberboard with several studs mounted in an arch. Then a movable piece would wipe over them and send power to another part of the resistor. As you can imagine, this was a high-wear item due to all of the movement over a malleable metal. Not only that, the heat didn't do it any long-term favors either.
The installation of the speed switch assembly is not something you need to worry about. However, grab a Club Car OEM service manual and call a friend. Not saying you can't handle it on your own, but backup never hurt anyone. The last thing you want is to be elbow deep with your hands full and have to drop what you are doing to grab something.

Hello , my name is Matt , I had bought and replaced this part over a year ago , it was the exact replacement for the part that I had removed , not sure what you mean by the triangular speed controller but this is the speed controller that runs the five wires to the solenoids , as it turns out someone before I owned the cart had two wires mixed up therefore making the cart start off from the second solenoid causing a jerk from stop , the wires have specific lengths and if you look careful you can see how they go just by length but double check by wire diagram and color , my cart is an '86 club car and I don't mind replacing and updating electrical parts for dependability issues .
I had installed this switch in my '86 Club Car about a couple years ago , I too would have liked to have had a wiring diagram to at least check the wiring witch was in it to begin with , it was wrong ! The first two solenoids were wired backwards causing the cart to take of in what is second speed creating an annoying jerk , if you haven't taken it apart yet take a couple of photos of how it is wired at this point and if the wiring was good to begin with and the speed controller failed recently you should be able to wire it the same way as the color coded wires lay out currently , also you will see when you take the rubber band of the new unit that the wires that go to the five solenoids are cut to length to reach each solenoid shortest to the far left (#1) and the longest one (#5) on the far right , as soon as I noticed the exacting length of wires I could see the first two were off causing my initial problem . The throttle linkage attaches mechanically to the switch arm and that is pretty straight forward and obvious . I would think they have a tech that should be able to help with the installation wiring at Buggies Unlimited , good luck Matt Peterson.
The "yellow" wire does not go to the solenoids, it attaches to the forward- reverse switch above it on the lower left post , better get a wiring diagram for a full understanding of where it all goes , but you'll also see that the other wires have specific lengths that the shortest wire "green" is the solenoid to the furthest left (as you sit on the cart) then red , white, blue, and black. Take the speed switch out of the cart and look for debis in the switches that are inside the speed controller. It only takes a little piece of gravel to hold one of the five switches open. The switches are just like the switch on the forward and reverse lever

If you are replacing these often , I would start troubleshooting a voltage problem. If you look online there are great step by step troubleshooting posts to make sure you keep your cart trouble free.
You will need a high speed motor. (Cost-about $600.00)
Hi Nate, if your cart has resistor coils, then there is no high speed option. It will burn the coils.
